Illinois Lottery reconsiders contest after Chicago fan wins million

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

I saw this on Yahoo Sports yesterday and thought it was pretty cool!  What are the odds!  I’ll send the idea over to the Killer Bees!

The Illinois Lottery officially started a new promotion with the Chicago Blackhawks last Wednesday: One adult fan would be randomly chosen at each home game, and if the Blackhawks scored at exactly the 10-minute mark of the second period — not a second over or under — then that fan would win $1 million.

What a day!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

What a day! Tuesday has passed and I was inspired by the new president’s speech.  It was thoughtful and I thought sent a message of hope (just like he’s campaigned for the last 24 months) and it was cool watching younger people inspired by the day’s events.  I had fun watching the inaugural ball(s) – how many can the guy have in one night?  – with the family.  Different family members and friends were interested in different things.  Some were interested in the first ladies fashion, they first dance, and what the heck Kanye West was singing about.  I was interested to see how he interacted with the troops and I thought it was cool how he was looking for support for his Chicago White socks with the enlisted men and women of the 101st  Airborne.  Not your every day sucking up to the voters.

Say what you will about the new guy (I didn’t vote for him) but I feel he brought a sense of change (just like he’s been pitching all along) and inspired people to rise up to the occasion.  To be proud to be an American.  Nothing ticks me off more than when people start putting down the US and all the things that are wrong with this society.  Some never think to look outside the box.  I enjoy living in a country where I can sleep well at night.  I don’t have to worry about someone posting troops in my home because it’s convent for them or told what job I can and can’t do. – Well I wanted to be a rocket scientist but the damn math teachers kept me down.

President Obama promised a lot of things,  I hope he can deliver them.  We need someone to clean up the mess that’s been left behind not only by the previous party but those that were supposed to be looking out for our well being.   I can’t speak for my business partner but we both agree that we usually don’t share our political views.  I take a line from Linus from the Peanut’s Great Pumpkin – “There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.” =)

Now that’s been said over the day I’ve stumbled onto some really cool stuff!  First check out what CNN has cooked up with Billy Gates at Microsoft.  http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2009/44.president/inauguration/themoment/  They took photos from one moment in time and made a 3D rendering of the inauguration.  you can look at one moment in time for almost any angle.  It kind of reminds me of the Matrix and how it was really ground breaking ten years ago.  (I CAN’T BELIEVE it’s Been Ten Years!)

Big coffee drinkers hallucinate more (Study)

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Hey kids check this out.  Before you go out there and do something you *might regret*, well you can blame it on the coffee.   Cue Jimi Hendrix!  Thanks to the AP Wire.

LONDON (AFP) – People who drink more than seven cups of coffee a day tend to hallucinate more than less caffeine-driven colleagues, according to a study published Wednesday.

Those with a high caffeine intake are three times more likely to have heard a non-existent person’s voice than those who drink one cup a day, said the research by psychologists at Durham University.

But the study noted that the tendency to hear voices or have other hallucinations may not be caused by caffeine, but simply reflect the kind of people who drink lots of coffee.

“This is a first step towards looking at the wider factors associated with hallucinations,” said Simon Jones, the PhD student who led the study.

“Previous research has highlighted a number of important factors, such as childhood trauma. Many such factors are thought to be linked to hallucinations, in part because of their impact on the body’s reaction to stress.”

Co-author Charles Fernyhough stressed that the study did not confirm a causal link between caffeine intake and hallucinations, noting also that three percent of people regularly hear voices in their head.

“One interpretation may be that those students who were more prone to hallucinations used caffeine to help cope with their experiences,” he said.

“More work is needed to establish whether caffeine consumption, and nutrition in general, has an impact on those kinds of hallucination that cause distress.”

The researchers now plan to study the impact of other forms of food and drink on hallucinations.

“It’s surprising that there has been so little research into nutrition and hallucinations. In some countries high consumption levels of sugar and saturated fat are linked to poor mental health outcomes,” said Jones.

“Given the link between food and mood, and particularly between caffeine and the body’s response to stress, it seems sensible to examine what a nutritional perspective may add.”

The study appears in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
