(CNN) — It happens only once in a blue moon — and scientists say a blue moon is exactly what we’ll see in the skies this New Year’s Eve.

Don’t expect an azure glow over our lunar satellite, however. The term “blue moon” simply refers to the second full moon in a calendar month, something that hasn’t happened on a New Year’s Eve for nearly 20 years, NASA says.

“December 1990 ended with a blue moon, and many New Year’s Eve parties were themed by the event,” said Professor Philip Hiscock of the department of folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland, in Canada. “It was a lot of fun.” MORE

Knighthood for Patrick Stewart? Queen says make it so

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

London, England (CNN) — He has played kings, princes, captains and professors on stage and screen, but now actor Patrick Stewart will have a new title all his own: “Sir.”  The 69-year-old Yorkshire, England, native tops the list of those receiving New Year’s honors from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, the Cabinet Office announced Thursday.  Stewart, well-known for playing Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” will receive a knighthood. It means he will now be known in Britain as “Sir Patrick.” READ MORE

Google Nexus phone to debut Tuesday?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

(WIRED) — Google’s much-anticipated new phone, the HTC-designed Nexus One, could make its debut next week.

Google has scheduled a press event for Tuesday, January 5 at its Mountain View, California, headquarters. Though the company hasn’t mentioned Nexus One, the invitation mentions Android, Google’s mobile operating system for phones, and the company is widely expected to show the device that has had smartphone industry watchers buzzing for weeks.

The invitation-only event will be held two days before the Consumer Electronics Show begins in Las Vegas and just one day before many CES exhibitors have scheduled major press conferences. READ MORE

A High-Tech Movie Battle: Which 3-D Glasses Are Best?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

THE NEW YORK TIMES – While the blue-skinned Na’vi are shooting arrows out of the screen toward the audience in the 3-D movie “Avatar,” another battle is being fought in the theater — over the goofy-looking glasses that moviegoers must wear to see the three-dimensional effects.  Four companies are fighting for bridge of the nose with three different technologies.

Each of them is more advanced than the paper glasses worn to view “Bwana Devil,” regarded as the first of the commercial 3-D movies in the 1950s, but all work on the same general principle. Each eye sees a slightly different frame of the movie, but the brain puts them together and perceives depth.  FULL STORY

Over more than a decade, consumers became accustomed to the sweet, steady flow of free news, pictures, videos and music on the Internet. Paying was for suckers and old fogeys. Content, like wild horses, wanted to be free.  MORE

Star Trek was the ‘most pirated movie’ of 2009

Monday, December 28th, 2009

THE BBC – The latest Star Trek film was illegally downloaded more than 10 million times in 2009, according to an internet blog site that monitors file-sharing.

The figures suggest it is 2009′s most pirated film, ahead of Transformers sequel Revenge of the Fallen.

Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla was the third most pirated movie, with The Hangover and Twilight completing the top five.

The TorrentFreak blog reports on peer-to-peer activity which uses BitTorrent file-sharing software.

BitTorrent is one of the most popular means of transferring large files over the internet.

Other films featured in the list of most illegally downloaded titles include sci-fi thriller District 9 and the sixth Harry Potter adventure.

But X-Men Origins: Wolverine ranks fairly low in the Top 10, despite an unfinished version of the film appearing online ahead of its release.

Directed by JJ Abrams, Star Trek charted the early days of James T Kirk, Mr Spock and other crew members of the Starship Enterprise

Seen In Themonitor.com

Robert Fulghum, author of What on Earth Have I Done? and All I Really Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten, was approached by a real estate agent about selling his house not long after he had bought it.

The house in Seattle sits in a beautiful neighborhood with tree-shaded streets and walking distant from a coffee house, bakery, wine shop, grocery store, and a few more great shops.

Fulghum decided to let the Realtor appraise his house and was very surprised by the low figure she came back with. It was a lot less than what he had paid.

The Realtor explained that the location of the house diminished its value, because the house sits across the street from an elementary school and a few blocks away from a fire station, which means there is always lots of noise and traffic.  READ MORE
