One last treat from Conan’s dirty dog, Triumph

No more negotiations for “The Tonight Show’s” Conan O’Brien. With his payout set, and his last episode scheduled for Friday night, the host is ready to pack his late-night bags and say goodbye to NBC. But O’Brien won’t simply deliver a not-so-fond farewell to the suits he’s skewered in his monologues for the last two weeks. No, along with them, he leaves behind his faithful dog.

Due to the unavoidable issue of network ownership, it seems O’Brien must bid adieu to all characters he showcased and helped create during his talk show tenure at NBC. That, of course, includes longtime fan favorite Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

Johnny Depp Sets Sail on Fourth ‘Pirates’ Movi

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Captain Jack Sparrow will soon take to the seas again, and this time he is after the most sought-after treasure imaginable: the Fountain of Youth.

It was announced this week that the fourth installment of Disney’s highly successful “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise will begin filming in Hawaii this summer. Johnny Depp once again plays the flamboyant Captain Jack, and Geoffrey Rush reprises his role as his adversary, Barbossa. However, costars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not expected to return.

The film’s story is loosely based on the 1987 pirate novel, “On Stranger Tides” by award-winning fantasy author Tim Powers. The book tells the story of a young man — coincidentally named “Jack” — who is captured by the pirate Blackbeard and forced to join in the search for the Fountain of Youth.  MORE

NBC may give Conan O’Brien $40 million to go away

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Conan O’Brien is reportedly close to signing a $40 million deal to walk away from “The Tonight Show” and end a weeks-long controversy between the late-night host and NBC.

The agreement could come as early as Tuesday, according to the Wall Street Journal. The potential deal would bar O’Brien from “bad-mouthing” his former bosses at NBC but would allow him to take another television job within one year, the Journal said.  MORE

Mars rover Spirit’s days may be numbered

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

CNET
One of NASA’s seemingly immortal Mars rovers might soon be at the end of its days.

The Spirit rover had been cruising around the Red Planet, along with its companion, Opportunity, since they both arrived six years ago this month. (Spirit landed on January 3, 2004, while Opportunity landed on January 24 of that year.) Their mission to send back photos and data about the Martian surface was expected to last a mere 90 days. Instead, the two traveling research bots blew away all expectations, continuing their treks year after year.

However, scientists warn that Spirit’s most recent anniversary might have been its last. The rover became stuck in a sand trap nine months ago, after one of its wheels broke through a crusty layer of soil into a pocket of loose sand. It wasn’t the first time Spirit has run into trouble. Its right-front wheel stopped working in 2006, and a month ago, its right-rear wheel began to fail.

Could you do this? The No Lock People

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

THE NEW YORK TIMES – By JOYCE WADLER

IT’S the lore and lure of bucolic small-town living: The community is so safe, people don’t even lock their doors. But Joyce Weisshappel, a 63-year-old vice president with the Corcoran Group, a real estate company, does not live in a small town; she lives in Manhattan, in a luxury apartment building. And she doesn’t think she has ever locked her door in the 30 years she has lived there — she doesn’t even know where the keys are.

Why would she lock the door, she asks. There are 24-hour doormen, delivery people cannot enter the building unescorted and she’s never heard of a crime being committed there.

‘Bounty’ for Apple ‘trade secrets’?

Friday, January 15th, 2010

A lawyer representing Cupertino iPhone, iPod and “I’m a Mac” computer maker Apple is demanding that Valleywag, Gawker Media’s tech gossip site, retract its offer to pay as much as $100,000 for proof that the company’s rumored tablet or “iSlate” computing device actually exists.

“You and your company have crossed the line by offering a bounty for the theft of Apple’s trade secrets,” Michael Spillner, a lawyer for Menlo Park-based Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, wrote in a letter to Gawker Editor-In-Chief Gabriel Snyder citing California’s trade-secret law. According to Bloomberg News, Apple confirmed the letter was sent on its behalf.  MORE
