Can I Sell That on eBay?

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

MENTAL FLOSS – They say you can buy or sell anything on eBay, but if you wade through the site’s terms and conditions, the definition of “anything” becomes a bit narrower. Some forbidden items seem pretty obvious: many states in the U.S. regulate the sale of firearms, booze and tobacco to some degree or another, and bootlegged movies and knockoff handbags are as frowned upon on the site as they are on the street. But what about escargot? Stalactites? A massage?  We spent some time digging through eBay’s rules. Here are some of the more obscure items that can only be auctioned under certain conditions, or can’t be found at all.  READ MORE

CBP on lookout for cascarones, other products, during Holy Week

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

The Monitor

HIDALGO — They are an Easter tradition treasured by many in the Rio Grande Valley.

But cascarones — decorated eggs with confetti inside — could trigger federal penalties for people who do not declare them upon entering the country from Mexico, officials said.

“When they arrive, they should make that declaration to avoid penalties and perhaps seizure of the merchandise,” said Felix Garza, local spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

People crossing from Mexico are permitted to bring up to 10 clean and dry egg shells that have no confetti inside. The shells can have decorations on the outside and they must be for personal use, officials said.  READ MORE

Wily coyote evades NYC police capture for 2 days

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

NEW YORK (AP) — A wily coyote evaded New York City police for two days before being nabbed in a parking garage. It was the fourth coyote sighting in Manhattan this year.

The animal first eluded police capture Wednesday near the Holland Tunnel. It was spotted Thursday afternoon on the West Side Highway, and police chased it to an open-air garage in Tribeca.

Officers cornered the coyote, sedated it with a dart and then carted it off to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Animal welfare officials will observe the animal before deciding where to take it.

Last month, three coyotes were spotted on the campus of Columbia University. Earlier this month, one was seen in Chelsea.

Fasting from technology: Saturday is No Tech Day

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Saturday, March 27th, is “No Tech Day.” Sponsored by UK charity Practical Action, No Tech Day is a time to set aside the luxury gadgets for 24 hours “to raise awareness of how much we all rely on and use gadgets in our everyday life, and think what life is like for people in the developing world who do not have the same access to technology and energy.”

Practical Action brings practical technology to developing countries, and has undertaken 141 projects since 2007. Going without your computer and mobile phone for a day is supposed to ease stress but also give “a taste of what life might be like without [tech], and get an insight into why the work that Practical Action does is so important.”  MORE

Why Does Bottled Water Have an Expiration Date?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Have you ever wondered why that bottle of Poland Spring has a “drink by” date on it when common sense dictates that water doesn’t go bad? You can thank the great state of New Jersey. A 1987 NJ state law required all food products sold there to display an expiration date of two years or less from the date of manufacture. Labeling, separating and shipping batches of expiration-dated water to the Garden State seemed a little inefficient to bottled water producers, so most of them simply started giving every bottle a two-year expiration date, no matter where it was going.  CHECK IT OUT

6 Songs Used to Torture & Intimidate by Danny Gallagher

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Playing an annoying song over and over to get someone to spill their guts might sound like a gag from a Mel Brooks movie, but it’s actually become a standard practice. An article by an NYU musicologist in theJournal of the Society for American Music details how music was regularly used in interrogations on bases in Iraq and Afghanistan as a method of inducing disorientation to get suspects to talk without inflicting physical force. Here are some of the songs used by military and law enforcement entities to get their suspects to sing.  READ MORE
